The Good News & The Bad News about 122nd St. E. & Shaw Rd.

Everyone has seen the work going on at the corner of 122nd St. E. and Shaw Rd.  Most have wondered as I have about just what was happening as there were no signs that I remember seeing posted to tell about the project.  Well, Carol Silvernail has done some digging and has a few facts about the project to share with us.

First the Good NewsThere is none.

Second the Bad News: In Carol’s words.

Sunrise Terrace has seen the work currently going on at the corner of 122nd and Shaw Road.  Many of you have wondered what was happening as we did not see any signs posted to tell us about the project.  Carol Silvernail and Kirk Hall dug into the Pierce County website this weekend for information.  If you want to read about the project look up documents for parcel number 0419114042.  Click on external links to see the correspondence and permit numbers, starting in 2018.  The most recent permit number appears to be 911959.  While we didn’t receive notification apparently according to the County web site a yellow sign was posted on Shaw Road in July 2019 and neighbors in the immediate adjacent lots were notified.  Since we didn’t know about the project however there were no public comments on record.

The permit has been approved for 20 single family units on the west end of the plot and 100 attached townhouses within the 6.08 net developable acres.  In a hearing examiner’s report dated 11/05/2020 it was stated the homes would be priced “fee simple for entry level purchasers” with a total of 372 parking stalls and 952 average new daily trips.  The report also stated traffic will be of “no significant adverse impact on local roads” and no left turn lane into the development is necessary.  The main entrance will be across from the Shell station on 122nd and an emergency entrance will be on Shaw Road.  The name of the development is Shaw Heights.

At this point there’s probably not much we can do to express our concern about the high density and impact on traffic but the name that appears as the county contact is Associate Planner Donna Rhea.  Her email is donna.rhea@piercecountywa.gov and her phone number is 253-798-3288.  Mitch Brells and Paul Barber, from the Pierce County Engineering Dept, have also reviewed the project.  Mitch and Paul know our neighborhood well from past issues.

Kirk’s commentary:  Well Pierce County has done it again.  First, they shut down Shaw Rd for months and ended up with a section of road with a large planter box down the middle and a double wide sidewalk on the east side, effectively blocking expansion of the road to another lane without major expense, leaving us with essentially the same two-lane road we had before.  Then because Shaw was closed for so long people sought another way to get to South Hill, and found it in 122nd, which greatly increased traffic up 122nd. Pierce County has made no provisions for the increased traffic which causes real problems at certain times of the day.

Second, Pierce County has approved a road from the huge subdivision of Tehaleh to go straight down into the valley, where many of the vehicles will then go up 122nd. Because no provisions have been made to find an alternate route (perhaps extending 128th St. into the valley) or widen and control traffic on 122nd St. things are going to get much worse for the people who live along or must enter 122nd St. E., when this project is completed.

And this brings me to the Third point. 952 average trips daily (does that mean that we must double that number to 1,904 to get the number of cars on the road because to me a trip is one in and one out) will be put on the road daily at a place where there is already congestion. To me this doesn’t seem like “no adverse impact on local roads”, especially considering the already bad traffic situation.

I have to wonder what Pierce County is thinking. To me the logical steps would have been to start at Meridian and connect either 120th St or 122nd St as directly as possible to Meridian as these streets have short sections that could be completed for the connection.  The roads (and all of 122nd) would have to be widened to at least three lanes and appropriate traffic lights installed. Then we could talk about putting more traffic on 122nd.  The way it is now traffic will eventually become truly horrible, then years later County will recognize the problem and finally do something about it (hopefully before the year 2051).

Security Cameras vs Home Invaders

I came across this article from Pennsylvania about an incident which happened there on 18 May 2021 and thought it was important enough to share with our Neighborhood. The main point I wish to get across is the fact that the police have a good chance of rounding up all of the people who took part in this Home Invasion.  The homeowner who was the target of the Home Invasion had Security Cameras, which recorded the images of the invaders.  Additionally, many of the man’s neighbors also have Security Cameras and the police were able to obtain further recordings of the invaders, presumably they also recorded the vehicle used by the invaders. With the ever-expanding population in our area and the heavy load on undermanned area law enforcement departments it is essential that we take steps to safeguard our lives, property, and community. One thing all of us can do is invest in Security Cameras for our homes.

Recent Crime In Our Neighborhood

We received the note below from the Dysons.  It is disturbing.  Please pay attention to people coming into our Neighborhood.  Crime is going up and we must do all we can to combat it.

I need to urgently communicate two security issues for all neighbors.

First, two young males knocked on our door the night before last on Tuesday the 15th. They told me they were pest inspectors and wanted to look around my house. They gave me the names of neighbors who were having their homes inspected. Instinct told me they were lying and I asked them to leave immediately. They would not accept my request. They insisted they needed to look around my property for pests. I had to close the door as I had safety concerns at that point. When I shut the door, I was very nervous they might come back and harm my family or our property.

This evening I went out to start our motor home before leaving on a trip tomorrow and the engine sounded really strange. My husband looked under the motor home and said the catalytic converter had been cut out and damage was done under the vehicle.

I want to alert the neighborhood not only about this theft but also these two young men. They were unwilling to accept my “no” and I was nervous they might come back to harm us or harm our property in some way. My instincts were right. We have notified law enforcement and more than the theft, the safety of people is my main concern.

Second, our family has been threatened and security has become an issue for us with the loss of our son Cooper Dyson who was the young Pierce County Sheriff Deputy who died in the line of duty last year. Please alert the neighbors if they see any suspicious anti-law enforcement threatening behavior to let us know immediately.

Increasing Traffic on 122nd St East – Its Going to get WORSE – Much WORSE

Below is a note that one of our neighbors in the Shawnee Ridge development is sending to the people of Shawnee Ridge.  I think it contains some good information about concerns all of us should have. Exiting from any area on to 122nd St E has gotten much more difficult over the last two years, and it is going to get worse, much worse. Unless we act now we are going to find ourselves with long waits to get out of our areas/driveways, followed by a mad dash hoping not to be smashed by approaching vehicles.

I know the situation is dangerous as it is now.  One day I stopped at Military Rd. E. and 122nd St. E., checked for traffic and pulled out smartly on to 122nd St. E. going west. I had gone only 30 to 40 yards on 122nd when a vehicle whizzed by on my left, cut in front of me and sped away.  I have no idea how fast he was going, but am glad he missed me and the oncoming traffic.

“if you are concerned about privacy please note that you only need to fill in the starred boxes at SR162traffic.com petition to register your concern.  The more signatures we can get the better we hope it will be for traffic in our neighborhood.”

Neighborhood HOA

I live in the Shawnee Ridge HOA and have been involved in the SR162 Community Group for almost a year.  You may have seen our signs on SR162 advertising our Website, “SR162traffic.org”.  Our main focus right now is to try and stop Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) from building a roundabout at SR162 and 128th street.  You can go to our Website to learn more but let me explain briefly how a roundabout at 128th street impacts your homeowners.

Tehaleh is the largest development in Washington State.  Close to 10,000 homes are expected to be built in this development at completion.  For the month of October Tehaleh sold an average of 12 homes a week.  In order for the builder to continue to keep building these homes the county is requiring them to build a four lane road from their development down to 128th and SR162.  WSDOT has no plans to expand SR162 to handle this additional traffic which is expected to increase SR162 traffic by 150%.

This has a direct impact to traffic on Military road and south hill.  Traffic wanting to go west are expected to use Military road to get off the gridlock of SR162.  When the new road to Tehaleh opens up, the traffic on military is expected to increase 135% to 150%.   In addition, if the roundabout is allowed to be installed at 128th, the next roundabout is planned for SR162 and Military road.  A total of 11 roundabouts are planned between Orting and SR410.  Once the Military roundabout is installed there will be few breaks in traffic that will allow you to get onto Military Road/122nd St. E.

This is the primary reason I am involved with the SR162 Group.  We need traffic signals on SR162 to provide breaks in traffic.  We will also need traffic signals on Military Road so we can get out of our neighborhoods safely.

We have been discussing improvements for the Military Road corridor with the county transportation division that would help with the safety issues but they are years away.

We are asking that you would join us in stopping these roundabouts by communicating the information provided here to your residents so that they all know about this future traffic mess.   We also have a petition on our website SR162traffic.org that we are asking everyone to sign that requests the state to do required reviews that would look at the traffic impacts of a roundabout.  This petition will be provided to our legislators in Olympia who we are already talking to, to get them to demand traffic signals instead of roundabouts on SR162.

BMX Bike thefts

There have been a rash of BMX bicycle thefts recently.  One appears to have been 0.1 miles from my home, but in an area our Neighborhood Cameras do not cover.  The owner of this BMX stated that his “Ring” camera did not catch the theft.  This is not surprising  as the original “Ring” cameras were meant strictly as entry way cameras.  Another was stolen from the 7-11 at the corner of Meridian and 128th.  Its picture is the bike at the forefront in the 2nd picture.

I am posting pictures of these bikes as a public service with the hopes that they will be recovered.  The owners were told to check “Offer Up”,  “Craig’s List”, and other sites in the hopes that they will show up there.  At least one of the owners of the bikes shown below have filed a police report, which will make it easy to recover the bikes if they show up on any of the selling sites.

Theft on 138th Ave. E. (South of 122nd St. E.)

Ross  Connors experienced a break in on Friday early morning from 1:46:30 am on his camera until about 1:58 am.  And, then it has been told to us that they moved over to the white house on the corner of Military and 138th, went through the yard and didn’t find anything to steal so they moved on.  There were 2 people, who seemed to know the exact things they were looking for.  They opened all of the compartments on Ross’s truck and took several large ticket power tools and some smaller stuff.  I do not have a list yet.  But, all the compartments were locked and so was the cab of the truck.  It looks as though the jimmied the locks taking a few seconds to open all of them pick what was the most valuable. A police report has been made.

Ross is interested in knowing about the rest of the neighborhood and if they saw activity on their cameras.  It appears that they must have parked their vehicle at some other place and walked to Ross’s. We would be very interested in having a picture of their vehicle and if possible their license plate.

You can contact me if you have any information on the people pictured or their vehicle.

Beware of Aggressive Door-to-Door Pest Control Salespeople

By Luke Rambo

This time of year, we get reports from our clients about aggressive door-to-door pest control salespeople.

There seem to be more and more companies popping up each year, hiring temporary unlicensed people to go door-to-door selling pest control services. These temporary workers are typically not trained in proper identification of insects, and they are often brought in from out of state for the summer months.

As we all know, fear can be a powerful motivator, and many times the only training these salespeople receive is on sales tactics designed to capitalize on people’s natural fear of pests. They have little to no training on our local insects and pests.

The stated goal of some of these companies is to grow the business for two years then sell to a large national chain. “No Soliciting” signs mean nothing to these people!

At our company, we choose to deal in facts and reality, not fear and doubt. The aggressive sales tactics exhibited by some of these door-to-door companies give our industry a bad reputation, and it is increasingly frustrating for us (and our local competitors who “play by the rules”) to see some of our long-term clients sign up with these poorly-run organizations.

So what can you, the client, do about it?

Do Your Research

We strongly urge you to look for online reviews and do your own research before signing up with any service company.

Report Aggressive Pest Control Salespeople

If you have one of these doorknockers come to your door, we advise you to ask for their Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) Pest Control Operator (PCO) license number. If they do not provide you with that, and they proceed to mention anything about Carpenter AntsTermites, or other wood destroying organisms, please report that person and their company to WSDA—they are breaking the law.

The WSDA Pesticide Licensing Department can be reached at 1-877-301-4555. We are active members of Washington State Pest Management Association (WSPMA), comprised of 200 pest control companies and affiliated businesses, and our association has worked directly with the WSDA from a consumer protection point of view in an attempt to combat these unprofessional and unethical organizations.

The WSDA has stated the only way they can enforce the laws against these types of activities is if consumers report them directly. For this reason, many of these companies will not leave sales literature or even a business card. We also urge you to inform your neighbors of these issues if you see or hear about the doorknockers coming to your neighborhood. We have heard some wild stories about some companies sending the same salesperson to the same house as many as 10 times, all hours of the day and night. A firm “No thank you!” may not be enough sometimes.

New E-Mail Scam

Yesterday I received an e-mail from one of the people in the Neighborhood asking if I had an Amazon Account. I responded that I did not have one but asked what she needed.  I was surprised by the answering request because I really did not know the person who sent the e-mail.  This is what I received:

I am sorry for bothering you with this mail, I need to get an Amazon gift card for my Niece, Its her birthday but i can’t do this now because I’m currently traveling and i tried purchasing online but unfortunately no luck with that. Can you get it from any store around you? I’ll pay back as soon as i am back. Kindly let me know if you can handle this.

 Await your soonest response.

Thanks,

The request did not ring true for several reasons. To name a few: (1) I did not know the person well enough for them to have made such a request. (2) The supposed inability to purchase a gift card online was suspicious. (3) The wording of the request was strange. (4) Why didn’t the person write a family member with this request?

Finally, I did something I should have done before I answered the e-mail.  I looked at the e-mail address, then went to the Neighborhood Directory and compared the e-Mail address of the sender with the e-mail address for the person in our Directory.  The results were enlightening.  The person who sent me the e-mail had an address like this xxxxxx1@comcast.net, while the person in our Directory had almost the same address of xxxxxx@comcast.net .  That 1 in the e-mail address made quite a difference.

I sent an e-mail to the man and wife whose e-mails were in the Neighborhood Directory and this is what I received back:

My email has been hacked.  Sorry.

I asked permission to write a Blog Post about this incident and got this reply:

Yes, that seems to be the second email that was sent if someone responded.  Do write it on the Blog Post.  They also wiped my address book clean.  I’ve lost all my email addresses so that should be fun to reconstruct.  I was also unable to change my email password on the main computer, so finally go it done on my laptop.  It has been a messed up afternoon and evening, not to mention what it has done to my friends and acquaintances.

This seems to be a variation on the old scam where a supposed family member or friend contacts you saying they broke down and need money for car repair or whatever.  The Bad Guys also destroyed her address book, making it difficult for her to warn people once the scam was discovered.

I suspect that if I had complied and bought the Gift Card I would have probably been asked to send the card number to the supposed “Niece”, and I would have been out the money I had spent to purchase the Gift Card.

If you get an unusual request by e-mail, first do what I should have done immediately, Call or e-mail (using a known good e-mail) the supposed sender and check whether they sent the message.  Remember – There a lot of wicked people out there who want to separate you from your money.  Take care.  Don’t be a Victim.

Where’s My Package? Again!

This is a continuation of a post I put up on 3 October 2014 (if you want to check out the original, titled “Where’s My Package?”).

Once again, we received notice that a package had been delivered, went to retrieve it, and found no package.  So, this time I checked my camera system to determine whether I had been the victim of “Porch Pirates”.  To my relief (if you want to call it that), there was no sign of a package delivery at my residense.  I checked my front door camera, my driveway cameras and  my cameras which show 138th Ave. Ct. E. and 117th St. E.  I saw no record of a delivery van when the package was supposed to have been delivered.  Then I surveyed the time from early morning until after we received the e-mail telling us that the package had arrived.  No sign of a delivery van that entire day.  I contacted the carrier and explained that I had received an e-mail telling me that my package had arrived, but I had cameras and knew that no delivery man entered my property.  I stated my cameras also surveyed the roadway and I could say for certain that no delivery van had been on 136th Ave. Ct. E. on the day my package was supposed to have arrived.

I asked the carrier to contact the driver and ask him where he had dropped my package. I was told that they would “try” but I would probably have to wait until the driver finished his rounds.  They promised to call me back.   Not very satisfactory, especially since the followup call back never came.

Further sleuthing convinced me that the carrier was using an unmarked van and it had probably dropped my package off at a neighbors.  Their house number is the same as mine, just one street over from mine.  A quick call elicited the information that my neighbor had just arrived home and found my package at her front door. Soon thanks to her husband, who brought the package over, I was actually in receipt of my package.

I was able to track down my package because I had access to my cameras and Neighborhood snapshots in our neighborhood repository.  In this case it probably only saved me about 5 minutes because when I called the neighbors my package had just been discovered.  Thank goodness for good neighbors.

It’s nice to have cameras.  If someone had stolen the package from my front door, I would have had a pictorial record of them, from several cameras, all time stamped and evidence  to show police. The pictures would have been far better than you can get from the 1080P that even the better doorbell cameras have.

Before I started this post, I contacted Dav Eide, and he told me that he too had a missing package recently.  Dav knew it had never arrived because he also has a camera system.  In his case, the vendor shipped a replacement which was lost, probably by delivery to the wrong address.

FAKE Covid-19 Testing

I just read a report from Kentucky about FAKE COVID-19 testing stations.  These people are charging up to $250 per test.  They set up in parking lots, often after convincing churches or similar organizations of their legitimacy. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/fake-coronavirus-testing-sites-probed-in-kentucky/ar-BB128lBH?ocid=spartandhp .

Please be aware and spread the word about these lowlifes. Their test are junk and they may give you a false sense of security if they do get back to you and say you are clear.
